Avalanche hits Kashmir, 1 army jawans and 4 civilians killed


Five bodies, including that of a major, have been recovered so far in Sonmarg, said an official at the district centre.

Five Indian army jawans were killed while four went missing after a snow Avalanche hit HAWS (High Altitude Warfare School) camp in Jammu and Kashmir's Ganderbal district today. Five bodies, including that of a major, have been recovered so far in Sonmarg, said an official at the district centre.

In Kupwara, four out of five family members were buried alive.
Rescue operation to trace the missing troops and the other survivors has been launched.

LIST OF DEAD

Major Amit Sagar was among the dead and two troops were pulled out of the snow. "3-4 soldiers are also missing," said an official.

The names of the civilians who died are: Habibula (50), Azizi (48), Gulshan Bano (19), Iirfan (17).

SNOWFALL AFFECTS DAILY TRAFFIC

Transport, rail and air links between the Kashmir Valley and the outside world remained suspended on Wednesday as fresh snowfall disrupted life.

MeT has predicted heavy snowfall in upper reaches of Kashmir valley till Jan 26.
